Teaching Clinic

The Student Out-Patient Teaching Clinic is located on campus and serves as a place for students to work on the public, family, and friends throughout the entirety of their academic experience.  Beginning approximately 4 weeks into their first year, students have the knowledge to give basic relaxation massages; by the end of the first year, they are well equipped to treat in a number of therapeutic aspects and have learned how to massage first, second, and third trimester pregnant women.  During the course of second year, students are focused on the information, treatment, and home-care of a variety of disorders/conditions that clientele may present with; ranging from tension and migraine head aches to depression to whiplash and so much more, the student therapists are capable of handling a diverse variety of aliments.

The clinic is open Mondays - Thursdays from 3:00 to 9:00 pm, Fridays from 3:00 to 8:00 pm, and Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm during the September to May months.  In June and July, the clinic is open from 4:00 to either 7:00 or 9:00 pm Monday to Thursdays.  The clinic is closed through August.  Each student must earn 100 credits either in the clinic or on out-reaches throughout the year and are always looking for new clients to practice on.  There are 3 treatment types: 45 minutes, 90 minutes, and Hydrotherapy (a 90 minute treatment, half spent in the hydro of your choice and half spent receiving a massage).  If you are interested in booking a treatment, please book online at www.pimtmassage.com.

As this is a teaching clinic, there is always a Registered Massage Therapist supervising the students.  At various times during a shift, the supervisor will check in on each student during a treatment in order to assist, ask questions, and/or see how the student is doing.  Each student is required to use the knowledge learned in the classroom during their clinic shift; this means that as the students learn the tools, such as techniques or assessment, they are expected to practice them throughout their time in clinic.  That being said, the above treatment times include both assessment and massage.

One of the other ways in which students earn their credits is through outreach opportunities.  We take students to various venues throughout the city to familiarize them with working away from a clinical setting.  Some examples of outreaches we have done in the past are: University of Saskatchewan "Stress Less"; The Western Canadian Speedo Championships 2010; and we have worked with the Canada Revenue Agency, the MS Society, and We Day as student therapists.  If you are interested in booking an outreach with us, please contact the office at saskatoon@pimtmassage.com during the May - July months as spaces for outreaches are limited and fill quickly.

The Student Out-Patient Clinic is a wonderful way for students to work in the health care field, practice the career they have chosen, and grow as therapists in a safe and encouraging atmosphere.  Our supervisors are highly qualified and are prepared to assist the students as professionals.  If you would like to know more, please drop by the Institute to talk to the Administration or Supervisors throughout the week; we are happy to give you more information about both our clinic and our campus.
